In freight transport, most goods were transported by road in June, passenger transport increased by 18.6%

In passenger transport, both passenger numbers and transport distances rose, but significantly slower than in the previous months. By 40% more passengers were transported by rail than last year. The decrease in the volume of goods transported by freight transport was caused by a decrease transport via pipeline.

In June 2022, passenger transport recorded an increase in the number of passengers for the sixth consecutive month. Their number increased by 18.6% compared to the corresponding period last year and reached 53.8 million persons, which represented the second highest figure in 2022. The number of passengers on trains increased by 40%. Road transport plays a role in the transport of passengers up to 88%.

In June 2022, passenger transport performance, taking into account the length of the roads, reached 860 million passenger-kilometres, compared to last year, they were higher by almost a half. The high year-on-year growth was influenced by the increase in transport distances mainly in rail transport, where the number of passenger kilometers traveled increased by 48.9%.

Freight transport was affected only by road transport

The total volume of freight transport in June 2022 year-on-year reached higher values than a year ago (20.6 million tons, an increase by 3.7%). However, the volume of transport decreased month-on-month. In the long term, the overall performances in June reached a level of almost 90% of the values achieved in the corresponding pre-pandemic period (June 2019). An increase of transport in June was mainly hampered by dynamic year-on-year changes – decrease in rail and pipeline transport. Other types of transport, including pipeline, recorded a year-on-year decrease in volume of up to 27%.

A significant component - road transport, which represented more than 70% of the transported tons of goods, rose year-on-year. Enterprises1) transported 14.5 million tons by road, which was by 15.6% more than a year ago. Since the data from April 2022, the SOSR adjusted the monthly outputs (tables) on road freight transport2) so that freight transport is reported together for all enterprises, regardless of the main business activity.

Although, the volume of goods carried by rail decreased by 5.2% year-on-year, approximately one-sixth of the goods was carried by rail.

In June 2022, freight transport performance, taking into account the transport distance, reached 3.3 billion tonne- kilometers (tkm), but they still did not exceed the values from the pre-Covid corresponding period of 2019, they improved by 3.6% year-on-year.

Development of turnover, employment and wages in June 2022

Turnover3) of the transportation and storage was by 29.5% higher year-on-year in June. The result was mainly supported by the growth of the most important land transport and transport via pipelines, as well as the second largest division – warehouse and supporting activities. Turnover in air transport increased more than fourfold year-on-year, although this type of transport represents only a relatively small part of the section. Turnover of water transport more than doubled, and postal and courier activities by almost a fifth.

Employment in transportation and storage was higher by 2.8% year-on-year in the sixth month of 2022, mainly due to the influence of the two strongest divisions, namely in land transport and transport via pipelines by 1.6% and in warehousing and support activities by 7%. Significant growth was also recorded by the smallest divisions, water transport (by 22.3%) and air transport (by 45.9%). Only one division of the industry, postal and courier services, recorded a decrease by 0.2%.

The average nominal monthly wage in this industry reached EUR 1 175 in June, which represented an increase by 6.5% compared to the corresponding period a year ago. Real wages in the industry decreased by 5.9% after adjusting for inflation.

Transportation and storage for the first half of 2022

297.6 million people were transported by passenger transport, with a year-on-year growth by 53%. In rail transport, passenger transport increased by 77.4% and in road transport by 50.5%. Performance in passenger-kilometres increased by 74.2%.

In the first half of the year, 118.2 million tons of goods were transported by freight transport. Compared to the corresponding period of 2021, the transportation of goods increased by 3.4%. Performances in tonne-kilometres were higher by 3.2%.

Turnover in transportation and storage increased by 25.1% year-on-year in the first half of 2022. The number of employed persons increased by 2.3% since the beginning of 2022 compared to the corresponding period last year. The average nominal monthly wage increased by 7.2% year-on-year (to EUR 1 140) and the real wage decreased by 3.3%.

The data for the second quarter of 2022 has been revised and refined based on the results of the weekly survey in road freight transport.

  • 1) companies that report transport as their main or secondary business activity
  • 2) starting with the data from April 2022, road transport is reported both in structures for public transport (enterprises whose main business activity is transportation and storage SK NACE 49 – 53) and for non-public transport (enterprises whose main business activity is other than transport, i.e. other than SK NACE 49 – 53, but they carry out freight transport as a secondary activity)
  • 3) turnover
