A slump in construction deepened, overcoming the rate of declines during the financial crisis of 2009

In February 2021, construction of the SR reached the lowest value of February since 2017, output was almost a quarter lower year-on-year. In particular, new construction decreased,  repairs and maintenance reduced fewer.

In February 2021, construction output reached the value of EUR 274,6 million, it was the lowest volume of February since 2017. Construction output was lower by 23,8 % year-on-year, while the dynamics of lagging behind also exceeded the last year's values ​​in individual months and such a significant year-on-year decrease was not recorded even during the financial crisis in 2009.

Compared to January 2021, after seasonal effects, construction output was lower by 5,9 %.

In February,  work of construction companies carried out on the domestic market and abroad decreased. Domestic construction output, with a year-on-year decrease of 24,5 %, reached EUR 249,6 million; regarding months of February, it was the lowest since 2015. The volume of work on new construction, including modernization and reconstruction, also decreased significantly year-on-year by 29,3 % and on repairs and maintenance by 13,3 %.

The volume of both construction activities according to output specification decreased by more than 20 % year-on-year. Work on construction of buildings decreased by 24,2 % year-on-year and on civil engineering (including the construction of motorways) by 25,7 %. The dynamics of a decline accelerated in both cases compared to January.

On the contrary, a decline in construction activities carried out abroad slowed down, after a fall in January of 31,9 %, a decline in February moderated to 15,6 %. However, work abroad accounted for only 9,1 % of the total construction output.

In summary for the two months of 2021, compared to the same period of 2020, construction output decreased by 21,9 % and output abroad was lower by 22,8 %.
