Employment and average monthly wage in selected sectors of economy in April 2023

Although nominal wages significantly increased, their real growth was maintained only in accommodation

Nominal wages continued to grow at a significant rate, above 8% in all sectors in April. However, they were still unable to resist a high inflation, only employees in accommodation received more in real terms. Employment grew in most of the monitored sectors, a decrease in the number of employees was recorded mainly in the two largest sectors, industry and selected market services.

The number of employed persons1) increased in 6 of the 10 monthly monitored sectors of the economy in April 2023. The number of employees increased the most in the accommodation, the rapid growing rate from the last year slowed down, employment rose by 3.3%. The number of employees increased by more than 2% in food and beverage service activities and construction. On the contrary, employment fell by more than 2% in wholesale, up to 2% in selected market services, transportation and storage, and also in industry.

From January to April 2023, the number of employed persons increased in 6 of the 10 monitored sectors. It rose the most by 6.1% in accommodation and by more than 2% in construction and information and communication. Year-on-year, lower number of employees worked in selected market services by 2.8%, in wholesale by 1.4%, and employment fell up to 1% in transportation and storage and in industry.

Year-on-year development of the average wage

In all ten sectors of the economy, the nominal monthly wage2) increased year-on-year, the fastest, by almost 17% in accommodation, the slowest by 9% in transportation and storage and in industry in April 2023. However, high inflation reduced nominal wages, and in real terms only employees in accommodation recorded higher wages than a year ago by 2.7%. Due to real growth, wages in accommodation, which were among the lowest, exceeded wages in construction and retail trade. A decrease in real wages ranged from 1% in selected market services to less than 5% in transportation and storage and in industry.

From January to April 2023, the nominal monthly wage increased in all monitored sectors, in most of them at a double-digit rate, the most in accommodation - by almost a fifth year-on-year. Since the beginning of the year, the growth of real wages has been maintained only in accommodation by 4.4% and in food and beverage service activities by 0.1%. In the other eight sectors, they decreased from 0.4% in construction to 5.8% in information and communication.
