In June, construction output was slightly higher than a year ago, lagging behind pre-pandemic levels by almost 15 %

A growth in the volume of construction output for the domestic market before the summer was driven by repair and maintenance. Year-on-year, building activity was higher, construction of motorways and other civil engineering works slowed down. Higher growths exceeding the level of two years ago are recorded only by less significant (in terms of share) work abroad.

In June, construction output reached a total volume of EUR 476,3 million, it was higher by 3 % year-on-year. However, this value still represented a 15 % lagging behind June 2019, i.e. the same period before the pandemic. As the last year was affected by a year of declines under the influence of anti-pandemic measures, the SO SR also releases comparisons with the same period two years ago (currently with June 2019) for the purposes of balancing the return to the level before the pandemic.

Month-on-month, after taking into account seasonal effects (compared to May 2021), construction output was lower by 6,5 %.

Construction works for the domestic market was higher, year-on-year, only for the second time this year, although only slightly by 0,5 %. Their share in total construction output was 90,8 %. In June, the decisive component of domestic production of new construction (including modernizations and reconstructions) lagged behind last year's June values by 4,3 % and compared to the level before the pandemic (June 2019), the decline deepened to almost 25 %. The year-on-year growth of the whole construction industry thus supported a growth of repair and maintenance, which was 7,7 % higher than in June 2020. But even this component of production still lagged behind the situation before the pandemic by 9 % (compared to June 2019).

In terms of division by production specification, building activity increased by 4,4 % year-on-year, while civil engineering works decreased by 6 %. The June's decline in civil engineering works, which includes, among other things, the construction of motorways, was the slightest so far this year, and a growth was achieved only once - in April. Both components lagged behind the level two years ago by a double-digit value.

For the fourth month in a row, construction works for the non-domestic market increased significantly, the June's increase by more than a third (by 35,4 %) compared to last year's June affected a growth in total construction output, although foreign production accounted for only about a tenth of construction output. Compared to June 2019, production abroad was higher by almost 45 %.

In total, for the first half of 2021, construction works reached a total volume of EUR 2 217,6 million and were 2,7 % lower than in the same period last year. At the same time, the half-year balance was 8 % lower than in the same period two years ago, i.e. before the pandemic. As for the domestic production, which decreased by 5,1 % compared to the first half of 2020, a lower volume of construction activities was performed, especially new construction by 8,9 %. On the contrary, repairs and maintenance were by 2,7 % higher, year-on-year, for the whole first half of the year.

Note: preliminary data; construction production includes volume of works realized by own employees; including estimation of production for self-employed persons and construction establishments of non-construction enterprises; absolute data are at current prices, indices are calculated from constant prices (average prices of 2015).
