Construction output rose by 4,4 % year-on-year, it is lagging behind the pre-pandemic period by more than 8 %

Repair and maintenance works increased year-on-year, as well as works on buildings. New construction and civil engineering works were lagging behind last year. The higher volume of construction activities than before the pandemic was achieved only by the less significant works carried out abroad, there was a nearly two-thirds growth for the second consecutive month.

In May, construction companies achieved production in the total amount of EUR 433,2 million, compared with May last year, it rose by 4,4 %. However, construction work still lagged behind the level of two years ago, the decrease exceeded 8 %, compared to May 2019.

In a month-on-month comparison (compared with April 2021), after seasonal adjustments, construction output was lower by 1,7 %.

In May, domestic construction work remained approximately at the level of the previous year, with a slight year-on-year decrease by 0,3 %, reaching a total volume of EUR 381,9 million. New construction  works (including renewals and enhancements) were decreasing by 5,9 %, on the contrary, activities in the field of ​​repairs and maintenance recorded a significant year-on-year increase. Although they represent a lower share of total production, they significantly contributed by almost a fifth increase (by 19,5 %) to a slowdown of the overall decline. Total construction activities on the domestic market lagged behind the level before the pandemic by more than a tenth, mainly due to lower activities in the more significant production- new construction (including renewals and enhancements), repairs and maintenance lagged behind by less than 2 %.

In terms of output specification, there was a year-on-year decrease of civil engineering works, which also include the construction of motorways, the decrease was significant by 10,5 %. On the contrary, for the third month in a row, construction work on buildings increased, in May by 5,2 %. However, both components still lag behind the level of two years ago.

Construction work carried out abroad increased significantly, with a year-on-year increase of over 60 % for the second month in a row, reaching 62,6 % in May. At the same time, for the second month in a row, they exceeded the level two years ago. However, they accounted for less than 12 % of total construction output.

On average, in the five months of 2021, construction output reached the volume of EUR 1 741,3 million compared to the corresponding period of 2020 it decreased by 4,1 %. The volume of work on new construction, including renewals and enhancements, decreased by 10,1 % (represented more than two-thirds of domestic production). Repair and maintenance works increased by 1,5 % since the beginning of the year.
