Industry grew by more than two-thirds year-on-year, but was still just below a level of the pre-pandemic production

In April 2021, sectors of industrial production grew significantly year-on-year, but only six from 15 sectors surpassed the pre-covid level of production (April 2019). The most influential production of automobiles, after a fourfold year-on-year increase in production, still lags behind the period of two years ago by more than 10%.

Industrial production (PP) increased by 69 % year-on-year in April. A growth was recorded in all 15 monitored industries 1), most of which recorded significant double-digit changes in production volume. These oscillated for individual sectors or groupings of industries 1) in the range from 1,3 % to 320,6 % as for the manufacture of transport equipment. The extremely high growth of industrial production is due to the low comparable base, as in April 2020 there was a significant economic slowdown connected with a fall of individual parameters as part of radical measures during the first wave of the pandemic. Most producers were forced to limit or disconnect production a year ago, which led to a year-on-year decline of 42 % last year.

It is therefore appropriate to provide an assessment of the current performance of the industry in comparison with the volume of production in the same period before the pandemic (April 2019). The current state of production exceeded pre-pandemic levels so far in only six of the 15 industrial sectors.

A rise in the production of manufacture of transport equipment (by 320,6 %) contributed most significantly to the overall increase of production in April this year, which, however, still did not match the performance of industry to the level of the same period before the pandemic. At the same time, in April,  the result of industry was affected by a growth of manufacture of rubber and plastic products by 62,9 %, further an increase in electricity and gas supply by 35,3 %, manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. by 56,4 % as well as a rise in manufacture of electrical equipment by 89,3 %.

Some sectors, such as manufacture of textiles and leather, or manufacture of pharmaceutical products or other manufacturing, lagged behind the pre-pandemic production by more than a quarter. However, they are less important sectors.

According to the main industrial groupings, compared to April 2020, production of capital goods increased by 145,9 %,  production of durable goods by 103 %, production for intermediate consumption by 49,4 %, production related to energy by 28,9 % and production of non-durable goods by 16,7 %.

After seasonal effect adjustment, industrial production decreased by 1 % in April 2021 compared s o March 2021.

In summary, since the beginning of the year, PP increased by 17,2 % year-on-year, most significantly in the manufacture of transport equipment by 33 %,  electricity and gas supply by 16,6 %, as well as in manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. by 22,9 %, in manufacture of basic metals by 16 % and in manufacture of electrical equipment by 19,7 %. Year-on-year, production decreased in manufacture of coke and petroleum products by 10,8 % and in manufacture of textiles and leather by 6,7 %.

According to the main industrial groupings, production of durable goods increased by 28,3 %, production of capital goods by 25,7 %, production for intermediate consumption by 13,3 %, production related to energy by 11,5 % and production of non-durable goods by 2,7 %.

Note: preliminary data; industrial production represents volume production changes in its natural expression. Data are adjusted from the influence of the number of working days by program JDEMETRA+ and during processing of every month they are back-casted from the beginning of the time series.
1) According to the Statistical classification of economic activities SK NACE Rev. 2, the structure of the industry consists of three sections – Mining and Quarrying, Manufacturing and Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning Supply. Manufacturing is further divided into 13 special groupings of industrial sectors
