Retail turnover reached the level of a year ago, the situation is fluctuating, six components by category of stores are still in a decrease, three are in a growth.

In June, the easing of measures taken in connection with the COVID-19 was reflected in positive month-on-month growth in all selected trade activities. After three months of more significant declines, turnover of retail trade decreased only by 1,6 % year-on-year. Compared with June 2019, three out of nine groups of stores reported higher turnover, in addition to supermarkets and hypermarkets, also specialized stores for households and stores of goods of information and communication technologies.

Although, the volume of turnover in all selected trade activities did not reach the pre-pandemic level, but in most of them, it approached the volume of the corresponding period last year.

Turnover of wholesale even slightly exceeded the last year's volume (by 1,2 %). Although, turnover of retail trade and sale and repair of motor vehicles were lower than a year ago, but this was the slightest decline in recent months. The development was favourable at the month-on-month level, each of the main activities recorded a growth, turnover of accommodation and food and beverage service activities increased by more than half (in accommodation by 54 % and in food and beverage service activities by 50,5 %).

At the month-on-month level, each of the main activities recorded a growth, turnover of food and beverage service activities increased by more than half (in accommodation by 54 % and in food and beverage service activities by 50,5 %). Turnover also developed favourably in other activities, an increase was in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 15,5 %, in retail trade by 4,6 % and in wholesale by 2,3 %.

Development in June 2020 compared with June 2019

Turnover of sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 8,3 % in June, the downward rate was the slowest from the beginning of the year. A fall was affected by lower turnover in sale of motor vehicles, but considerably by higher turnover of repair and maintenance of motor vehicles as well as a rise in sale of parts and accessories.

After two months of a decrease, turnover increased again in wholesale by 1,2 % year-on-year.

Turnover decreased in retail trade by 1,6 % year-on-year. Compared to the previous year, turnover increased mainly in retail sale in non-specialized stores (hypermarkets and supermarkets) by 3,9 % as regards the individual retail activities. For the second month in a row, turnover in retail sale of other household goods in specialized stores also increased by 12,8 %, and after three months of decline, turnover also increased  in specialized stores of ICT equipment by 9,2 %.

Six out of nine activities in the structure of retail trade were below the level of turnover from June 2019, the most significant was a decrease in retail sale of other goods in specialized stores by 4,7 %, in retail sale of automotive fuel by 8,5 % (an impact of lower fuel prices) and in retail sale of cultural goods by 23,5 %.

As part of the increased interest in data on changes in the economy, the SO SR provides in June more comprehensive monthly information on turnover in retail trade by selected more detailed retail activities.2) Sales in specialized retail stores of clothing recorded lower turnover by 7,3 % and stores of footwear and leather goods by 9,4 %. As part of the group of specialized food establishments, retail sale of meat and meat products recorded lower turnover by 3 % % year-on-year. On the other hand, stores of tobacco products achieved higher turnover by 9,8 % in June.

Providers of accommodation services are still failing to catch up with last year's level; compared to June 2019, turnover decreased by 61,2 %.

A decline in food and beverage service activities moderated. Compared to the same period last year, it reached 1,2 %, it was the slightest decrease in the last four months.

Development over the first half of 2020 compared with the corresponding period of 2019

Turnover decreased in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 23,4 % over the first half of 2020.

A turnover fall was reflected in wholesale, compared with the corresponding period last year, it decreased by 1,1 %.

Turnover decreased by 4,5 % in retail trade, a fall was almost in all activities, most significantly in retail sale of other goods in specialized stores by 12,6 %, in retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores by 10,6 % and in retail sale not in stores, stalls or markets by 5,6 %. Turnover increased only in retail sale in non-specialized stores by 5,2 %.

Turnover decreased in accommodation by 46,4 % from the beginning of the year.

Turnover was also lower in food and beverage service activities by 10,9 % compared with the corresponding period last year.

We thank all enterprises that fulfilled the reporting obligation, even in the current difficult situation, and provided the Statistical Office of the SR with primary data required for the compilation of statistics on turnover in internal trade.
