After six years of growth, employment fell by 1,4 % year-on-year, for the first time.

A decline in economic performance was also reflected in employment developments. After growing for the past six years, employment fell by 1,4 % in the 1st quarter of 2020, according to the Labour Force Sample Survey (LFSS). The number of employees 2) decreased in absolute terms by 36,1 thousand to 2 552,3 thous. persons. The employment rate of 3) persons aged 20 - 64 years decreased by 0,5 p.p. to 73 % compared to the 1st quarter of 2019. The employment rate of men decreased by 0,7 p.p. to 79,2 % and women by 0,3 p. p. to 66,7 %. After deducting people working abroad, employment in Slovakia decreased by 1,5 % to 2 426,3 thousand persons.

A decrease in employment was accompanied not only by an increase in unemployment but also by a rise in the number of population outside the labour market. The number of economically inactive persons increased by 36 thousand year-on-year to 1 880,2 thousand persons. 4)

Compared to the 4th quarter of 2019, seasonally adjusted total employment decreased by 21,5 thousand (by 0,8 %) to 2 558,6 thous. persons.

Employment decreased the most in services, in the 1st quarter of 2020 the number of employees decreased by 45,4 thousand persons. In case of the individual sectors of services, the largest decreases were in transportation and storage by 16,3 thousand, accommodation and food service activities by 13,6 thousand, health care and social assistance by 10,8 thousand and in education by 9,1 thous. persons. A decrease in the number of employees was also in construction by 9,7 thous. persons.

A decrease in the number of employees was influenced by a lower number of employees by 42 thousand (by 1,9 %) to 2 170,1 thous. persons. The number of entrepreneurs 5) increased by 5,9 thousand (by 1,6 %) to 380,2 thous. persons due to the higher number of entrepreneurs without employees by 4,5 thousand to 304,4 thousand persons and entrepreneurs with employees by 1,4 thous. to 75,8 thous. persons.

According to the age structure, employment decreased the most for workers aged 25-34 by 24,5 thousand persons. The number of employees also decreased in the category of 50 - 54 year olds (by 13,2 thousand persons) and in the category of 15 - 24 year olds (by 11,1 thousand persons). As regards the categories that recorded growth, the largest number of employees was aged 60 and over (by 5,9 thousand persons).

Most regions recorded a decrease in employment, at most in the Žilinský (by 3,2 %), Košický (by 2,7 %) and Bratislavský kraj (by 2,5 %). The employment rate decreased the most in the Bratislavský kraj by 2,1 p. p. year-on-year, however, its level was the highest among the regions in the first quarter of 2020 (79,9 %). The lowest one was in the regions of eastern Slovakia, in the Prešovský kraj at the level of 68 % and in the Košický kraj at the level of 68,1 %.

People working abroad

The downward rate in the number of people working abroad according to the LFSS 6) slowed down by 10,7 p.p. to 0,3 % compared to the 1st quarter of 2019. The total number decreased by 0,4 thousand to 126 thous. persons year-on-year.

Most people worked in construction (35,5 thousand), industry (31,3 thousand) and in health care and social assistance (22,7 thousand). Within European countries, Slovaks worked mainly in Austria (42,8 thousand persons), the Czech Republic (27,9 thousand persons) and Germany (19,6 thousand persons).  

Most workers from the Prešovský kraj (27,2 thousand persons) and the Nitriansky kraj (22,4 thousand persons) went to work abroad.

Job vacancy

In the 1st quarter of 2020, the Slovak economy offered 6 456 (by 26,1 %) fewer job vacancies, 7) than in the 1st quarter of 2019, on average, their number reached 18 308. Job offers decreased in most sectors of industry, mostly in manufacturing (by 1 880 posts) and construction (by 1 504 posts).

1) LFSS methodology is in accordance with international definitions and recommendations of the ILO and Eurostat
2) according to the LFSS, the employed are all persons over 15 age, who perform work for 1 hour at least in surveyed (reference) week and who get wage, salary or other remuneration or bonus in order to gain profit, including persons performing a contractual work, seasonal workers, persons on maternity leave, persons employed abroad less than 1 year, persons commuting to work abroad and persons paid for activation works; respondents are included into sectors by economic activity of local unit, not the whole company
3) share of the employed in the age category 20–64 expressed in percentages from the population of the same age
4) economically inactive persons according to the LFSS are persons who are unemployed in the monitored week and have not been actively looking for a job during the last four weeks or are looking for a job, but are not able to start work within two weeks. This also includes persons on parental leave
5) shareholders, self-employees, self-employed farmers, persons engaged in the liberal profession with one or major occupation
6) migration for work abroad lasting less than one year including unspecified time for journey to work
7) number of job vacancies - number of newly created, no occupied or vacant jobs by quarterly statistical statement including estimate for tradesmen
