Turnover in internal trade in May 2020

The gradual easing of COVID-19 measures in the second half of the month was reflected in month-on-month increases in turnover in selected trade activities in May 2020, but these growths did not return turnover to pre-COVID-19 levels. In all the main activities of internal trade, the level of turnover was lower than a year ago in May 2019, from 81,6 % (accommodation) to 8,9 % (retail trade). In the year-on-year comparison, only selected partial activities reported higher turnover, e.g. repair and maintenance of motor vehicles, retail sale in non-specialized stores (hypermarkets and supermarkets) or retail sale of other household goods in specialized stores.

Development in May 2020 compared with April 2020 1)

Turnover increased in most activities compared with the previous month, at most in food and beverage service activities by 26,1 %. A rise was also recorded in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 16,7 % and in retail trade by 2,8 %. Turnover decreased only in accommodation month-on-month, compared to April, it dropped by 8,5 %. Turnover of wholesale remained unchanged at the level of the previous month.

Development in May 2020 compared with May 2019

Turnover in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 35,7 % year-on-year. The total decrease was affected by lower turnover mostly in sale of motor vehicles by 44,5 % year-on-year. A 3,1 % rise was recorded in repair and maintenance of motor vehicles.

The second consecutive month, turnover decreased in wholesale as well. Compared with May 2019, it fell by 10,8 % in total. It decreased at most in other specialized wholesale by 19,4 %. Higher turnover was only in wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals by 4,9 %, year-on-year.

Turnover decreased in retail trade by 8,9 % year-on-year. A decline was recorded in most activities, of which the most significantly in retail sale of other goods in specialized stores by 26,2 %. Turnover continued to rise in retail sale  in non-specialized stores (hypermarkets and supermarkets) by 3,5 % and it also increased in retail sale of other household goods in specialized stores by 5,5 %.

Turnover continued to decrease significantly in accommodation, compared to May 2019, it dropped by 81,6 %.

A 32,7 % fall was recorded in food and beverage service activities compared with the corresponding period last year.

More detailed information on year-on-year development in retail trade

A decrease in retail trade at the level of 8,9 % was influenced by lower turnover in most activities with the exception of retail sale in non-specialized stores, which increased by 3,5 % year-on-year (hypermarkets and supermarkets) and retail sale of other household goods in specialized stores by 5,5 %.

In addition to the already mentioned retailers of other goods in specialized stores with a 26,2 % decrease in turnover, a significant decrease was recorded by specialized stores of automotive fuels by 11,8 % and retail sale not in stores, stalls or markets by 8,2 %. The largest decrease in turnover by 38,5 % was in retail sale of stalls and markets, which, however, does not represent a significant share of the total turnover in retail trade.

As for an increased interest in data that reflect impacts on the economy, the SOSR provides more extended monthly information on turnover in retail trade by selected more detailed retail activities in May. But these are only partial data on enterprises having 20 or more employees and smaller enterprises as well as self-employed persons with an annual turnover of more than EUR 5 mil.. 2)

In May, sales in specialized retail stores of clothing recorded significantly slighter year-on-year decrease in turnover, by 26 % compared to April´s slump by 80,7 %, turnover in stores of footwear and leather goods decreased by 18,6 % (in April, a year-on-year decrease by 79,1 %). During May of this year, a rise in turnover of pharmacies moderated, a 5,6 % year-on-year increase.  

Turnover in specialized stores of food, beverages and tobacco decreased by 14,9 % year-on-year. As part of this group, retail sale of meat and meat products recorded a decrease in turnover by 7,7 %  at the time of the gradual easing of measures. On the contrary, stores of tobacco products increased by 2,6 % in May.

Development over the first five months of 2020 compared with the corresponding period of 2019

From the beginning of the year to the end of May, turnover decreased by 26,5 % in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles due to a decrease in  sale of motor vehicles by 32,7 % and in sale of parts and accessories of motor vehicles by 9,9 %. Turnover increased in repair and maintenance of motor vehicles by 1,3 % compared with the corresponding period last year.

A turnover fall was reflected in wholesale, compared with the corresponding period last year, it decreased by 1,5 %. Turnover decreased mostly due to a fall in other specialized wholesale by 9,7 %, wholesale of machinery and equipment by 8,7 % and in wholesale of ICT by 5,4 %. A rise was recorded in a half of activities, most significantly in non-specialized wholesale by 6,1 %.

Turnover decreased by 5,1 % in retail trade, a fall was almost in all activities, most significantly in retail sale of other goods in specialized stores by 14,4 %, in retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores by 11 % and in retail sale not in stores, stalls or markets by 6 %. Turnover increased only in retail sale in non-specialized stores by 5,5 %.

Turnover decreased in accommodation by 42,7 % from the beginning of the year.

Turnover was also lower in food and beverage service activities by 13,2 %.

We thank all enterprises that fulfilled the reporting obligation, even in the current difficult situation, and provided the Statistical Office of the SR with primary data required for a compilation of statistics on turnover in internal trade.
