Turnover in internal trade in April 2020

In April 2020, the development of turnover in internal trade was fully influenced by the measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID 19. The closure of tourism establishments, restaurants and non-food stores had a significant impact on a decrease in turnover in all main internal trade activities. However, the situation differed in individual activities, especially in retail trade, where some groups of sellers according to specialization recorded a significant decrease in turnover, others achieved an increase in turnover especially in the year-on-year comparison.

Development in April 2020 compared with March 2020 1)

Turnover in internal trade decreased the most in accommodation by 44,5 % and in food and beverage service activities by 24,1 % month-on-month. A decrease was also recorded in other activities, in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 16,9 %, wholesale by 12,9 % and in retail trade by 6,9 %.

Development in April 2020 compared with April 2019

Turnover in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 48,7 % year-on-year. The total decrease was affected by lower turnover in all activities, mostly in sale of motor vehicles, there was a turnover decline of 57,3 %.

For the first time in this year, turnover in wholesale decreased as well. Compared with April 2019, it fell by 9,2 % in total.

Turnover in retail trade decreased by 14,3 % year-on-year. A decline was recorded almost in all activities with the exception of retail sale in non-specialized stores (hypermarkets and supermarkets).

In April, a decrease of turnover in accommodation reached 84,7 % compared with the corresponding period last year.

Enterprises active in food and beverage service activities recorded lower turnover by 42,1 % compared with April 2019.

More detailed information on year-on-year development in retail trade

A decrease in retail trade at the level of 14,3 % was influenced by lower turnover in all activities with the exception of retail sale in non-specialized stores, which increased by 2,5 % year-on-year (hypermarkets and supermarkets).

The most significant decrease was recorded by retailers of other goods in specialized stores by 30,7 %. The overall result of retail trade was also affected by a decrease in turnover in retail sale of automotive fuels in specialized stores by 25,9 %, which, however, is attributed to significantly lower unit prices of fuels compared to April 2019. A significant decrease was also reflected in retail sale of other household equipment in specialized stores by 25,5 %. The largest decrease in turnover by 51,2 % was in retail sale of cultural an recreation goods, which, however, does not represent a significant share of the total turnover in retail trade.

As for an increased interest in data that reflect impacts on the economy, the SOSR provides more extended monthly information on turnover in retail trade by selected more detailed retail activities in April. But these are only partial data on enterprises having 20 or more employees and smaller enterprises as well as self-employed persons with an annual turnover of more than EUR 5 mil.. 2)

In April, sales in specialized retail stores of clothing recorded a year-on-year decrease in turnover by 80,7 %, while turnover in stores of footwear and leather goods decreased by 79,1 %. However, during April of this year, pharmacies increased their turnover by 9,5 % compared to April 2019.

At the same time, turnover in specialized stores of food, beverages and tobacco decreased year-on-year. As part of this group, turnover in stores of tobacco products decreased by 9,5 %. At the time of the peak of coronavirus impacts - during April, retail sale of meat and meat products recorded an increase of 4,5 %.

Development over the first four months of 2020 compared with the corresponding period of 2019

A decline was also reflected in the development of turnover for the first four months of 2020. Turnover in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 23,9 % due to a decrease in  sale of motor vehicles by 29,3 % and in sale of their parts and accessories by 10,1 %. Turnover in repair and maintenance of motor vehicles increased by 0,8 % compared with the corresponding period last year.

A turnover growth was maintained in wholesale, it increased by 0,9 %, year-on-year. A rise was affected by higher turnover mostly in non-specialized wholesale by 9,2 %, in wholesale on a fee or contract basis by 7,1 % and in a wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals by 11,8 %. A decrease was the most significant in other specialized wholesale by 7 %.

Turnover in retail trade decreased by 4 %, a fall was almost in all activities, most significantly in retail sale of other goods in specialized stores by 11 %, in retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores by 10,4 % and in retail sale of other household goods in specialized stores by 11,7 %. Turnover increased only in retail sale in non-specialized stores by 6 %.

Turnover in accommodation decreased by 31,2 %.

Turnover in food and beverage service activities was also lower by 7,5 %.

We thank all enterprises that fulfilled the reporting obligation, even in the current difficult situation, and provided the Statistical Office of the SR with primary data required for a compilation of statistics on turnover in internal trade.
