Turnover in selected sectors of economy in May 2020

The kick-start of the economy after the release of measures in May resulted in an increase in turnover in industry and selected market services compared to April. However, the year-on-year decrease of turnover was maintained in May and it was recorded by all sectors of the economy. Of their individual activities, turnover was significantly lower, similarly as in April, in manufacture of transport equipment and in travel agencies and tour operator activities.

Turnover increased in industry by 24,8 % and in selected market services by 0,2 %, at month-on-month level. It fell in information and communication activities by 3,1 %, in transportation and storage by 2,1 %. Turnover in construction remained at the level of the previous month.

Although the year-on-year decrease of turnover was mitigated compared with April, turnover in industry continued to significantly drop. In May, it decreased by 34,5 %, year-on-year.

The turnover dropped in the majority of industrial sectors. The most significant decrease was recorded in manufacture of transport equipment where turnover reached only half of the volume of turnover from last May (drop by 54 %).

A year-on-year decrease of total turnover was significantly affected by lower turnover in manufacture of basic metal and fabricated metal products except machinery and equipment by 32,2 %, manufacture of rubber and plastic products and other non-metallic mineral products by 25,7 %, manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. by 27,8 % and in manufacture of electrical equipment by 34,6 %.

A decrease was recorded in manufacturers of beverages, food and tobacco products, total turnover dropped by 12,2 %.

Overall decrease of turnover in industry was mitigated also due to an increase in manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products by 27,4 % and the turnover in manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations also grew by 2,6 %, year-on-year.

In construction, turnover continued to decline, it dropped by 13 % compared with May 2019.

The May´s drop of turnover in  transportation and storage 2) was even more significant than in April, its volume was reduced by 27 %. There was a drop almost in all activities, most considerably in warehousing and support activities in transportation by 34,6 % and in land transport and transport via pipelines by 24,1 %. Turnover rose only in water transport.

After three years of continuing turnover growth in information and communication 3), it decreased by 6 %, in May 2020. There was a lower year-on-year turnover almost in all activities, the overall decrease was mainly due to a lower turnover in information services by 23,3 %, film production by 54,7 % and in telecommunications by 6,2 %. A growth of turnover was maintained only in computer programming by 6,4 %.

In selected market services 4), turnover decreased year-on-year by 14,6 %. The impact of anti-COVID 19 pandemic measures was felt mainly by subjects operating in gambling and betting activities whose turnover dropped by 29,2 % and in travel agencies and tour operator activities  which do not even reached a quarter of their turnover compared with the corresponding period last year (drop by 80,5 %). Only turnover in real estate activities and architectural and engineering activities continued to grow.

Since the beginning of the year up to the end of May, turnover decreased in industry by 21,3 %, year-on-year. The development by SK NACE sections was affected by decrease in manufacturing by 23,2 %, electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 10,1 %, mining and quarrying by 4,9 % and in water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation by 2 %.

In terms of the specific groupings of the industrial sectors, turnover decreased mainly in manufacture of transport equipment by 33,9 %, manufacture of basic metal and fabricated metal products except machinery and equipment by 18,6 %, manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 28,6 %, electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 10,1 % and in manufacture of rubber and plastic products and other non-metallic mineral products by 16 %. Turnover grew year-on-year only in manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 2,4 % and in manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations by 6,8 %.

Turnover in construction was lower by 5,9 % compared with the corresponding period in 2019.

Turnover in transportation and storage decreased, year-on-year, by 13,1 %, the decrease was affected mainly by lower turnover in warehousing and support services for transportation by 19,9 % and in land transport and transport via pipelines by 10,3 %. Turnover rose only in  postal and courier activities by 6,4 %.

Total turnover in information and communication activities increased by 3,4 %. There was an increase only in computer programming by 12,5 %, these activities account for the largest share on total turnover. Telecommunications also play a major role, though their turnover dropped, year-on-year.

In selected market services, the turnover decreased by 4,9 %. It fell the most in travel agencies and tour operator activities by 30,1 % and in gambling and betting activities by 7,3 %. Turnover increased only in real estate activities, in architectural and engineering activities and in renting and leasing activities.
