Employment 1), according to LFSS, decreased in the 4th quarter after previous two years of a year-on-year growth. Compared with the 4th quarter of 2011, it decreased by 0,1 % to 2 313,7 thous. persons. The seasonally adjusted employment decreased by 24,9 thous. persons (by 1,1 %) to 2 302,4 thous. persons in the 4th quarter of 2012, compared with the 3rd quarter of 2012.

In terms of labour force structure, the development of the total employment was affected mostly by a year-on-year decline of the number of self-employed 2) by 4,9 % to 350,3 thous. The number of the self-employed with employees decreased by 14,4 % to 66,8 thous. and the number of the self-employed without employees by 2,3 % to 283,5 thous. The number of employees rose by 0,8 % to 1 961,6 thous. persons. The number of the self-employed whose working activity had a form of dependant work of an employee, decreased, year-on-year, by 6,7 % to 97 thous. persons.

In terms of particular sectors, the number of the employed decreased relatively the most in activities of households by 35,4 %, in professional, scientific and technical activities by 9,4 % and in financial and insurance activities by 6,9 %. The employment decreased in industry by 4,7 %, of which the most significantly in manufacturing by 4,9 %. The highest increases of the employed persons were recorded in real estate activities by 55,6 %, in other service activities by 17,5 % and in administrative service activities by 7,5 %.

The employment rate in the age category 20-64 3) fell, compared with the 4th quarter of 2011, by 0,4 p.p. to 64,6 %. The employment rate of men decreased by 0,1 p.p. to 72,5 % and of women by 0,5 p.p. to 56,8 %.

The total employment by the age structure decreased the most in the age category 25-34 by 1,5 % and at the age of 50-54 by 2,2 %. In terms of sex, the development on labour market was affected considerably by a decline in number of the employed men in the age category 15-24 by 7,1 % and women at the age of 25-34 by 4,2 %. The number of the employed in the age category over 55 rose by 6,8 % in total.

The share of individual regions in the total employment ranged from 11,3 % (Trnavský kraj) to 13,6 % (Bratislavský kraj). The number of the employed persons decreased, year-on-year, in four regions, relatively most in Trenčiansky kraj by 1,4 %. It grew in three regions; there was the highest increase in Trnavský kraj (0,7 %). The employment rate in age category 20-64 decreased, year-on-year, in five regions, of which most in Trenčiansky kraj 1,3 p.p. The employment rate rose only in Bratislavský kraj, Trnavský kraj and Banskobystrický kraj.

In 2012, the total number of the employed persons rose by 0,6 % to 2 329 thous. persons compared with the year before.

In the 4th quarter of 2012, the number of the employed abroad less than one year, increased, year-on-year, by 8,5 % to 123 thous. persons. In terms of European countries, the Slovaks worked mostly in the Czech Republic (37,6 %) and in Austria (25,3 %). The most persons working abroad were from Prešovský kraj (34,5 thous.) and Žilinský kraj (20,5 thous.). The persons employed abroad worked mostly in construction (33,9 %) and in industrial sectors (23,3 %).

In the 4th quarter of 2012, there were available, on average, 13 289 job vacancies 4). Compared with the 4th quarter of 2011, their number decreased by 1,3 % (by 170 posts). In absolute terms, the number of job vacancies decreased the most in trade by 424 posts. More significant decrease was also recorded in manufacturing, human health and social work activities, real estate activities, accommodation and food service activities. Job vacancies increased most considerably, year-on-year, in public administration, defence and compulsory social security, in construction and in administrative service activities.

4) number of job vacancies  number of newly created, no occupied or vacant jobs to the last day of a quarter; by quarterly statistical statement including estimate for tradesmen
