Turnover dropped again in industry, but continued to increase in selected market services

February´s turnover rose in 3 out of 5 monitored sectors of the economy, most significantly in information and communication. Selected market services as well as transportation and storage also followed up on January's increases. On the contrary, turnover in industry and construction decreased.

Industry, as the largest sector of the economy, recorded a year-on-year turnover decrease at constant prices by 2.2% in February 2024. It remained in negative values for the fourth consecutive month. Among 16 industrial sectors1), a turnover drop was recorded in half of them.

The Statistical Office of the SR would like to inform that since the publication of the data for January 2024, all absolute values and values of year-on-year and month-on-month indices for monitored period have been re-calculated due to methodological adjustments – transition to a new base period (from 2015 to 2021) and application of the concept of kind-of-activity units of enterprises2) (PDF - 153 kB). The change relates to all monthly indicators of sectoral statistics.

February´s turnover in selected market services increased by 6.7% year-on-year, which means that they remained in positive values for the second consecutive month. Transportation and storage enterprises also continued the same growth trend and recorded a year-on-year turnover increase by 3.4% in February.

In February 2024, turnover of construction enterprises decreased year-on-year by 7.3%, doubling the rate of decline compared to the first month of the year.

Turnover in information and communication activities increased by 8.6% year-on-year and repeatedly confirmed the long-term stability of their growth.

Development in February 2024 compared to January 2024

After seasonal adjustment, turnover in the second month of 2024 rose month-on-month in 3 of the 5 monitored sectors of the economy, most significantly in industry by 2.1%. In selected market services, as well as information and communication activities, turnover rose by 0.5%. Turnover dropped month-on-month in transportation and storage by 0.7%, in construction by 3.3%.

Development in February 2024 compared to January 2024

In total, for the first two months of 2024, turnover increased the most year-on-year in information and communication activities by 8.5%. In selected market services, it increased by 5.8%, and the cumulative turnover growth in transportation and storage reached 2.2%. On the contrary, industry recorded a combined year-on-year turnover decrease by 3.5%, as well as construction by 5.6%.

Since 2022, selected market services include business entities that are classified into the divisions 68 to 82 according to the main economic activity of SK NACE. Due to decreasing the burden of the business environment, data are not available on turnover for subjects classified into SK NACE divisions 85 to 96. Turnover therefore do not include information for education (SK NACE division 85), arts, entertainment and recreation, including gaming and betting activities (SK NACE divisions 90 - 93). Also, turnover of enterprises for other activities (SK NACE 95 and 96) to which they belonged among others laundry and dry cleaning, hairdressing and beauty treatment, funeral services, well - being services and other services of predominantly personal nature.
